A group of talented students from the Clerici Institute in Lovere has captured Japan’s attention with a brilliant idea: a smart refrigerator designed to fight food waste. The project, developed by twelve students from the IT sector, as part of the project “I am the future” promoted by Fondazione della Frera and has been chosen to be presented by Giulio, one of the students, at the Expo 2025 in Osaka – representing the Region Lombardy in the Italian Pavilion.
Technology Serving Sustainability
The smart fridge created by the students does more than just preserve food. The innovative idea, takes shape in a main screen that simulates the door of a refrigerator, where users can enter food items along with their expiration dates. It uses a traffic-light system to signal approaching deadlines and suggests recipes to make meals with products at risk of expiring. If items are already expired and cannot be consumed, it indicates alternative uses: for example, bread can be turned into breadcrumbs, while organic products can become compost.
An International Experience
Participating in the EXPO 2025 was a unique opportunity to engage with other students and researchers from around the world. The Clerici team showcased their prototype, receiving interest and praise from experts and visitors alike. The experience strengthened their passion for technology and opened doors to new global challenges.
School and Innovation: A Winning Combination
The success of this project shows how schools can be fertile ground for innovation. With the support of teachers and collaboration among students, an idea can become a concrete solution…one that improves everyday life and contributes to sustainability.
